Ever since I started in university back in 1993 I have been playing the game of Netrek. Despite the somewhat dated looks its many facets and unexpected game play depth still capture me. Over the years I have become involved in maintaining the official Netrek homepage, as well as helping out a bit on client and server development. Further down in the Links section you can find more resources that I maintain for the community.
Netrek is a multi-player battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. It is a team-oriented strategy game with a first person perspective that progresses in real time over the Internet. As a player, you captain starships to engage enemy vessels, bomb armies and invade planets in order to expand your team's space empire. The ultimate goal is to genocide the enemy race, but the carnage of battles along the way is ruthlessly fast paced and a lot of fun!
'I like to think of Netrek as the first online sports game'.
Kevin Kelly, WiRED magazine.
'Every now and then, someone on the GameSpot Forums wants
to know what the greatest Star Trek game is. Some respond with Star Trek:
Elite Force, the first-person shooter. Others reply with Star Trek: Armada,
the real-time strategy game. And yet others answer with Star Trek:
Starfleet Command, the starship tactical combat game.
They're all wrong. The greatest Star Trek game ever made is, ironically,
not an official Star Trek game. And yet it's one of the most revolutionary
and influential games ever made. It's one of the first games to actually
take advantage of the Internet for multiplayer. (We're talking years before
Doom appeared.) It's one of the first multiplayer games to feature distinctly
different player classes. It's a combination action and strategy game that
features an amazing amount of depth. It's a game that's still being played
today, despite the fact that it's more than 15 years old. And it's a game
that most of you have never even heard of.
That game is Netrek.
Jason Ocampo, GameSpot.
This is the Netrek homepage that I maintain. Netrek's vast and expanding array of tactics and strategies allows for many different play styles; the best players are the ones who think fastest, not necessarily the ones who twitch most effectively. Try it out. It's free!
When playing Netrek I use the handle "Shadow Hunter". On this website I host a great number of strategy guides, gathering photo's, Face Files and other Netrek resources.
This is where I work. Irdeto Access is a world leader in content protection technologies for digital video and IP networks. For over 30 years, the company has pioneered encryption and conditional access technology and standards, now used to protect content worldwide.
My little sister got her own homepage with a weblog. The title is still `Minke in Wenen', although she moved back to Holland in Februari.
This is the webpage of an up-and-coming ceramics artist without whom I wouldn't have been here.
